Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower on Barge

A Legacy That Lives On: The Story of Frying Pan Tower and FPTower Inc.

For generations, the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower has stood as a sentinel off the coast of North Carolina. Rising above one of the Atlantic Ocean’s most dangerous stretches of water, the iconic structure has guided mariners, witnessed countless storms, and become a symbol of perseverance, innovation, and coastal heritage.

Today, while FPTower Inc. begins an exciting new chapter, we believe it is important to reflect on the remarkable journey that brought us here—and to recognize the thousands of people whose generosity, dedication, and belief transformed an ambitious vision into an extraordinary legacy.

The Beginning of a Vision

Constructed in 1964 by the United States Coast Guard, the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower replaced the historic lightship that had served the treacherous Frying Pan Shoals for decades. For many years, the tower played a critical role in maritime navigation before advances in technology reduced the need for manned offshore light stations.

After years of sitting vacant and weathering the harsh Atlantic environment, the tower faced an uncertain future.

That changed in August 2010, when Richard Neal purchased the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower with a vision that extended far beyond preserving a historic structure. He believed the tower could once again serve the public—not only as an important piece of maritime history, but also as a platform for education, scientific research, emergency preparedness, and offshore innovation.

At the time, many viewed restoring a deteriorating structure located more than 30 miles offshore as an impossible undertaking.

Richard saw possibility.

As Richard began sharing his vision with the public, he popularized a simpler and more memorable name that would soon become recognized around the world: Frying Pan Tower™. While the structure’s official historic name remained the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower, the new name gave the project an identity that people could easily remember, rally behind, and proudly support.

That identity became more than a name. It became a symbol of preservation, adventure, innovation, and possibility, inspiring thousands of volunteers, donors, sponsors, researchers, educators, and supporters to become part of something much larger than the restoration of a historic structure.

Building Something Bigger Than a Tower

As interest in the project grew, it became clear that restoring and maintaining an offshore structure of this magnitude would require far more than one person’s commitment.

To create a sustainable path forward, Richard relinquished his ownership interests and restructured the tower into 32 fractional ownership interests, allowing individuals who shared his passion for preserving this historic offshore landmark to become owners and actively participate in its restoration and long-term stewardship. At the same time, FPTower Inc. was established as a nonprofit organization dedicated to coordinating the restoration efforts while expanding the tower’s public benefit through education, scientific research, maritime safety, and community engagement.

The tower quickly became more than a preservation project.

It became a gathering place for volunteers, educators, researchers, engineers, divers, students, photographers, and supporters from across the country who shared a common belief: that preserving our maritime heritage could also create opportunities for innovation and discovery.

Over the years, thousands of volunteer hours were invested in restoring critical infrastructure, improving safety systems, transporting materials offshore, and preserving one of America’s most recognizable offshore landmarks. These restoration efforts were essential to transforming the tower into a safe, functional platform capable of supporting FPTower Inc.’s charitable mission through maritime safety initiatives, scientific research, educational programming, and community engagement.

Every milestone represented the collective efforts of donors, sponsors, volunteers, and partners who believed that extraordinary things are possible when communities work together.

Science and Public Service

A Platform for Science and Public Service

As restoration progressed, FPTower Inc. transformed the tower into much more than a historic preservation project. By creating a safe and functional offshore platform, the nonprofit expanded opportunities for scientific research, public education, and maritime safety that would not have otherwise been possible.

Through its leadership and collaborative partnerships, FPTower Inc. welcomed researchers, educators, and partner organizations to utilize the tower for studying ocean conditions, weather patterns, marine ecosystems, and coastal environments. The nonprofit also developed educational initiatives that connected students with real-world science, engineering, and environmental stewardship while fostering partnerships with universities, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies that demonstrated the value of offshore infrastructure as a platform for research and public education.

Maritime safety likewise became an integral part of the organization’s mission. Through programs that promoted public awareness, supported emergency preparedness, and explored innovative lifesaving technologies, FPTower Inc. expanded its charitable impact well beyond historic preservation.

By combining restoration with research, education, and public service, FPTower Inc. demonstrated that a historic offshore landmark could become a modern resource for scientific discovery, community engagement, and maritime safety—setting a model for how preservation can serve a broader public purpose.

Historic Milestone for Frying Pan Tower Future

A Historic Milestone

In July 2025, FPTower Inc. reached a defining milestone when it became the majority owner of the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower through its accumulated fractional ownership interests. More than a change in ownership, this achievement represented the culmination of years of vision, perseverance, and unwavering support from a community committed to preserving the tower while expanding its charitable mission.

For the nonprofit, majority ownership reflected the trust placed in FPTower Inc. by donors, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters who believed the tower could serve as more than a historic landmark. Together, they helped transform it into a platform for maritime safety, marine science, education, and public service.

This milestone belonged not to any one individual, but to the thousands of people whose generosity, expertise, volunteerism, and encouragement made the organization’s mission possible.

A New Chapter Begins for FPTower Inc.

A New Chapter Begins

Like many ambitious and pioneering projects, the journey of Frying Pan Tower evolved over time. Following an extended period of ownership and governance challenges, FPTower Inc. and the remaining minority owners reached an agreement under which the nonprofit transferred its ownership interest in the tower.

While this marked the conclusion of FPTower Inc.’s direct stewardship and operational involvement with the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower, it did not mark the end of the organization’s purpose. Rather, it represented the beginning of a new chapter—one built upon the experience, partnerships, and accomplishments made possible through years of dedication and collaboration.

Throughout its history, the nonprofit’s greatest strength was never simply the ownership of an offshore structure. Its greatest strength has always been its ability to unite volunteers, donors, sponsors, educators, researchers, and community partners around a shared vision of serving the public through maritime safety, scientific discovery, education, and stewardship.

That vision remains unchanged.

Today, FPTower Inc. is building on that legacy by expanding its work through new partnerships and innovative programs that bring maritime safety, marine science, and ocean discovery closer to the coastal communities it serves.

Looking Forward

The experience gained through restoring and operating Frying Pan Tower provided FPTower Inc. with something far more valuable than ownership of a historic structure—it demonstrated the power of collaboration, innovation, and public service. Those lessons now serve as the foundation for the organization’s next chapter.

Today, FPTower Inc. is expanding its impact through three interconnected mission areas that build upon the legacy established offshore while addressing the evolving needs of our coastal communities.

Maritime Safety

Protecting lives on and around the water remains at the heart of our mission. Through public education, lifesaving technologies such as the U SAFE remote-controlled rescue lifebuoy, community outreach, and strategic partnerships with coastal agencies and organizations, FPTower Inc. is helping create safer waterways for residents, visitors, and first responders alike.

Marine Science

Building upon years of experience supporting offshore research, FPTower Inc. is developing partnerships with universities, community colleges, researchers, government agencies, and private-sector organizations to advance scientific understanding of our coastal and offshore environments. These collaborations will create new opportunities for marine research, environmental monitoring, and hands-on learning that inspire future scientists while contributing meaningful data to our understanding of ocean ecosystems.

Coastal Wildlife Observation

Technology is creating new ways for people to experience and appreciate our coastal environment. FPTower Inc. is working to develop live-streaming observation camera systems that allow students, educators, researchers, and the public to observe coastal wildlife both above and below the water’s surface. These initiatives foster environmental stewardship, expand educational opportunities, and connect communities with the incredible natural resources that define our coastline.

While these initiatives increasingly take place through partnerships and programs closer to shore, they remain rooted in the same vision that guided the restoration of Frying Pan Tower: using innovation, collaboration, and education to serve the public, advance scientific discovery, and strengthen the connection between people and our oceans.
