FPTower Inc. Expands Mission Following Ownership Transition of Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower
For years, Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower represented far more than a historic offshore structure. It became a symbol of preservation, innovation, scientific discovery, volunteerism, and the incredible things that can be accomplished when people unite behind a common purpose.
Today, FPTower Inc. Enters A New Chapter
The nonprofit has completed an agreement transferring its ownership interests associated with the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower to private ownership. While this transition concludes our direct stewardship of the Tower, it does not change who we are or why we exist.
Our Mission Remains the Same
From the very beginning, our work has focused on advancing maritime safety, marine science and research, educational programming, and public engagement. The Tower became an extraordinary platform for accomplishing that mission, but the mission has always been larger than the structure itself.
Over the years, together with thousands of donors, volunteers, sponsors, researchers, educators, and supporters, we transformed Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower into a nationally recognized platform for restoration, education, and scientific collaboration. We coordinated complex offshore restoration projects, expanded renewable energy initiatives, supported environmental monitoring and marine science, improved emergency preparedness, and created unforgettable experiences for visitors and volunteers from around the world.
Our commitment to maritime safety also continued beyond the Tower. In 2026, FPTower Inc. donated several U Safe remote-controlled rescue lifebuoys to coastal communities through our Save A Life initiative, providing innovative water rescue technology while promoting public awareness of drowning prevention and emergency response.
As Richard Neal, Chair of the Board and Executive Director, often reminds us:
“The tower may have created the mission, but the mission was never limited to the tower.”
That Philosophy Will Guide Everything We Do Moving Forward
Our years of offshore restoration gave us unique experience coordinating complex logistics, managing environmental challenges, building scientific partnerships, and engaging communities around meaningful causes. Those experiences now position us to bring our mission closer to shore through new partnerships that strengthen coastal communities throughout North and South Carolina.
In the months ahead, FPTower Inc. will continue expanding programs focused on maritime safety, marine science and research, educational programming, ocean stewardship, and community collaboration.
Although our relationship with the Tower has ended, our commitment to serving the public has not.
